Tue Mar 04 06:58:24 UTC 2025: ## Global Obesity Crisis to Worsen Unless Governments Act, Study Warns

**London, UK** – A new study published in *The Lancet* paints a stark picture of the future, predicting that nearly 60% of adults and one-third of children globally will be overweight or obese by 2050 without significant governmental intervention. The research, conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), analyzed data from 204 countries and reveals a dramatic escalation of the global obesity epidemic.

The number of overweight or obese individuals has already skyrocketed from 929 million in 1990 to 2.6 billion in 2021. The study projects this number will reach a staggering 3.8 billion adults by 2050, placing immense strain on healthcare systems worldwide. A particularly alarming finding is the predicted 121% increase in childhood and adolescent obesity, with North Africa and the Middle East, and Latin America and the Caribbean bearing the brunt of this increase.

Lead author Emmanuela Gakidou described the situation as “a profound tragedy and a monumental societal failure.” Co-author Jessica Kerr stressed that it’s not too late to act, urging stronger political commitment to transform diets, improve nutrition, promote physical activity, and create healthier living environments.

The study highlights that eight countries—China, India, the United States, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Indonesia, and Egypt—already house over half of the world’s overweight or obese adults. While poor diet and sedentary lifestyles are key factors, researchers acknowledge the need for further investigation into underlying causes, particularly the disproportionate impact on socially deprived groups. The research, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, emphasizes the urgency for global action to prevent this looming public health catastrophe.
