**Chennai, March 3, 2025** – Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has assured the swift repatriation of Indian fishermen detained by Sri Lanka, responding to concerns raised by BJP State president K. Annamalai. In a letter to Annamalai, Jaishankar stated that the Centre is prioritizing the safety and welfare of Indian fishermen and is actively engaging with the Sri Lankan government at all levels to secure their early release.
Jaishankar highlighted India’s repeated requests for a new round of fishermen-level talks, following the 6th Joint Working Group meeting on fisheries held in October 2024. He also noted that 535 Indian fishermen arrested by foreign nations have been released and repatriated since 2024.
Annamalai, who had initially written to Jaishankar urging intervention in the case of Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, expressed gratitude for the minister’s assurance on social media. The issue underscores the ongoing tensions between India and Sri Lanka concerning fishing rights in the Palk Strait.
