**NEW DELHI, March 1, 2025** – India is poised to overtake the United States in the number of scientific publications by 2029, Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh announced on Friday. Speaking at a National Science Day commemoration event, Dr. Singh cited future projections indicating this significant milestone.

While he didn’t specify his source, data from the National Science Foundation (2023) shows China currently leads with 898,949 publications, followed by the US (457,335) and India (207,390). Dr. Singh also highlighted a December 31, 2024, Stanford University and Elsevier ranking of the top 2% of scientists globally, showing India with 5,351 scientists, placing it 10th, compared to the US (1st, with 71,392) and China (2nd, with 27,165).

The minister attributed this projected growth to substantial increases in budgetary allocations for science departments. He noted a 926% increase in the Department of Science and Technology’s budget (from ₹2,777 crore in 2013-14 to ₹28,509 crore in 2024-25), a 230% rise in the Department of Science and Industrial Research’s budget, and a 139% increase for the Department of Space.
