Sat Mar 01 11:14:30 UTC 2025: ## Puducherry’s 750-Acre Industrial Corridor Project Moves to Final Stage

**Puducherry, March 1, 2025** – The long-delayed development of a 750-acre industrial corridor in Puducherry’s Sedarapet-Karasur villages has entered its final phase. The land parcel, acquired in 2006 for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) that was later cancelled, has been officially transferred from the Industries Department to the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation Limited (PIPDIC).

This transfer, following a February 18th notification, comes after years of negotiations with the central government. The Ministry of Home Affairs finally approved the land’s use for industrial development in October 2022.

The project encompasses a planned IIT-Madras research park (100 acres), pharmaceutical units (200 acres), and space for startups and MSMEs. A new road network connecting Sedarapet and Karasur is also included in the master plan developed by Ernst & Young. PIPDIC is mandated to use the land solely for industrial purposes and issue a ₹70.18 crore share certificate to the Puducherry government. A steering committee will oversee transparent land allocation.

Environmental concerns are being addressed with an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study underway by Hubert Enviro Care Systems. The study is crucial due to the area’s proximity to the Ousteri lake, a significant Asian wetland. Both environmental and wildlife clearances are required before construction can begin. The EIA report, along with further administrative steps, is expected shortly.
