**Chennai, February 28, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government announced a significant restructuring of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Friday, increasing the number of administrative zones from 15 to 20. This move, aimed at improving resource allocation and addressing administrative challenges, follows a 2022 announcement by the Minister for Municipal Administration.
The reorganisation, directed by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, will consider factors such as population density, electorate size, road infrastructure, and tax revenue. The GCC’s jurisdiction, encompassing 426 sq km and over 8.5 million people across 22 Assembly constituencies, currently suffers from misalignment between administrative zones and constituency boundaries. The restructuring seeks to rectify this.
The increased number of zones is expected to enhance the city’s investment climate and promote more uniform development across all areas. The MAWS Department Secretary confirmed the city’s burgeoning population as a key driver behind the decision.
