Fri Feb 28 15:47:55 UTC 2025: **Manipal Workshop Tackles Growing Male Infertility Crisis**
MANGALURU, INDIA (February 28, 2025) – A two-day Indo-German workshop on male infertility, opened Friday at Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, highlighting the growing global concern over declining sperm quality and its impact on fertility treatments.
The workshop, a collaboration between KMC’s Centre of Excellence in Clinical Embryology and the University of Munster’s Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Andrology, brings together 55 eminent scientists and researchers from both countries.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences) Sharath Rao emphasized the significant contribution of male infertility, often linked to work pressure, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, and diet, to the overall human infertility issue. He noted that India alone has nearly 20 million couples requiring assisted procreation, underscoring the need for increased research in this area.
Dr. Rao stated the workshop aims to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice, fostering innovation and patient-centric solutions to improve reproductive healthcare. Centre of Excellence in Clinical Embryology head Satish Adiga echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the limited research currently dedicated to male fertility in India despite the substantial need.
University of Munster Reproductive Medicine Centre director Stefan Schlatt highlighted the significant challenge posed by poor sperm quality in IVF treatments, stressing the urgency of developing advanced sperm selection methods to improve outcomes for couples.
The workshop will focus on integrating cutting-edge research into clinical practice, exploring areas such as non-invasive sperm selection and fertility preservation for children with cancer.
