Fri Feb 28 13:56:22 UTC 2025: ## Veteran Bureaucrat Tuhin Kanta Pandey Appointed New SEBI Chairman
**Mumbai, February 28, 2025** – Tuhin Kanta Pandey, a highly respected 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He succeeds Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure was marked by a conflict of interest allegation related to an investigation into the Adani Group.
Pandey brings a wealth of experience from a nearly four-decade career in public administration. His resume includes serving as district collector and magistrate, Revenue Secretary, and Finance Secretary. However, he is perhaps best known for his five-year stint as Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), where he oversaw the privatization of Air India and the initial public offering (IPO) of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)—achievements described as major highlights of his career. His DIPAM tenure was the longest in the department’s history.
Colleagues and former associates praise Pandey’s calm demeanor, commitment to work, efficiency, and expertise in public affairs. His background includes an economics degree from Panjab University and an MBA from the University of Birmingham. He has held key positions in both Odisha and Delhi, working in various crucial social and economic departments.
Pandey’s appointment comes as the Indian market faces a bearish trend with foreign institutional investors withdrawing funds. However, he has previously expressed confidence in the resilience of the Indian economy, dismissing concerns about foreign investor withdrawals as temporary fluctuations. He has also focused on increasing accountability and returns from Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs). His leadership will be crucial as SEBI navigates the current market challenges.
