Thu Feb 27 19:49:03 UTC 2025: ## Sudan Faces Impending Catastrophe as Famine Grips War-Torn Nation
**UNITED NATIONS** — The United Nations has warned of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan, with famine gripping five regions and threatening to engulf many more. Over 600,000 people are on the brink of starvation, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing war between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk described the situation as the “world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe,” painting a grim picture of a nation teetering on the edge of complete collapse. He warned of a potential “explosion into chaos” unless immediate action is taken to end the conflict and deliver aid.
The crisis is particularly acute in Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur, where escalating violence forced the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to suspend operations this week. Prior to the suspension, WFP was feeding roughly 300,000 people in the camp, but recent attacks, including the destruction of the central market, have severely hampered aid delivery. Satellite imagery shows heavy weapons were used in and around the camp.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has already displaced over 12 million people – the world’s largest displacement crisis – and claimed tens of thousands of lives. The RSF’s attempts to consolidate control in areas it occupies risk further entrenching divisions and prolonging the violence. The already strained health system is failing, with less than 30% of hospitals and clinics functional, leading to outbreaks of diseases like cholera, which has already killed at least 70 and infected over 2,200 in White Nile state.
The UN estimates that 30.4 million people in Sudan require urgent assistance, including food and healthcare. Türk and other officials have stressed the urgent need to end the war, deliver emergency aid, and restart agricultural production to prevent a further descent into widespread famine. The international community is facing a race against time to avert what could become an unparalleled humanitarian disaster.
