**New Delhi:** The Supreme Court of India ruled on Friday that Rohingya children in Delhi can apply for admission to government schools. The court dismissed a petition seeking a direct order for admission, instead instructing the children to apply directly and, if rejected, to challenge the denial in the High Court.
The ruling comes after a petition filed by the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, represented by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, which sought admission for approximately 500 Rohingya children possessing UNHCR cards. The court stated that a similar order had been issued in a previous case addressing the same issue.
While the petition also sought access to healthcare and other government benefits for Rohingya refugees, the court focused solely on the education aspect in this ruling. Previous hearings saw the court request details on the refugees’ locations and living conditions in Delhi to better understand their needs. The petitioners had argued that the lack of Aadhaar cards prevented access to essential services, including education and healthcare.
The court’s decision emphasizes a procedural approach, requiring Rohingya children to initiate the admission process themselves before pursuing legal recourse. This decision follows a February 12th statement by the court that no child should be discriminated against in accessing education.
