Fri Feb 28 17:22:32 UTC 2025: ## Dalit Farmers Protest Crop Destruction in Tamil Nadu
**TIRUVANNAMALAI, TAMIL NADU –** Residents and CPI(M) cadres protested in Vandavasi on Friday, demanding action against those responsible for the destruction of crops cultivated by Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers. The incident occurred on February 11th when a group of caste Hindu residents, allegedly led by K. Harshavarthini, used drones to spray herbicide on seven acres of panchami land (reserved for Dalits) in Arungunam village.
The affected Dalit farmers claim that despite reporting the incident weeks ago, no action has been taken by revenue officials or the police. They argue that the perpetrators should be held accountable to restore confidence in marginalized communities.
The land’s ownership history is complex. Originally panchami land, it passed through several hands before being acquired by N. Karunakaran, who transferred it to his wife, Harshavarthini, before his death. Revenue officials later confirmed the land’s classification as panchami land, intended for Dalit use. This revelation reportedly angered some caste Hindu residents.
Tiruvannamalai Collector K. Tharpagaraj has ordered an inquiry into the matter, which is currently underway. Police and revenue officials intervened at the protest, assuring the demonstrators of swift action and leading to the peaceful dispersal of the crowd.
