HONOLULU, HI – Professional surfer Makai McNamara is recovering after a near-fatal wipeout at Hawaii’s Banzai Pipeline, one of the world’s most dangerous surf breaks. McNamara was knocked unconscious after being hit by a large wave on Sunday.
Fellow surfer and friend Eli Olson described the incident as a “freak accident,” stating McNamara went headfirst into the reef and was submerged for approximately two minutes. A group of surfers, lifeguards, and bystanders rushed to his aid, performing CPR before bringing him to shore.
McNamara was initially unconscious but regained consciousness on the beach. He was then transported to a local hospital and placed in a medically induced coma for three days. His father, Liam McNamara, provided an update via Instagram, expressing gratitude for the rescue efforts and reporting his son is on the road to recovery.
Olson praised the collaborative rescue effort and expressed hope for McNamara’s full recovery. The incident has highlighted the inherent dangers of surfing at Banzai Pipeline and the importance of quick response in emergency situations.
