**New Delhi, February 28, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today to strengthen the strategic partnership between India and the European Union. The meeting focused on advancing negotiations for an ambitious trade deal and exploring avenues for increased trade and investment.
Ms. von der Leyen, who arrived in India on a two-day visit, highlighted the importance of the India-EU partnership in navigating current global challenges. She emphasized the unique position of both entities to collaboratively address these challenges. Discussions are expected to encompass the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Indo-Pacific situation, and developments in West Asia.
Bilateral trade between India and the EU is substantial. In 2023-24, goods trade totaled $135 billion, making the EU India’s largest trading partner in goods. Services trade reached a record high of $53 billion in 2023. EU investments in India exceed $117 billion, with approximately 6,000 European companies operating within the country. A joint statement is expected following the talks. Both sides are optimistic that the proposed free trade agreement will significantly boost economic engagement.
