**New Delhi, February 28** – India is celebrating National Science Day today, commemorating the anniversary of Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman’s groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect in 1928. This annual event, first observed in 1987, honours Raman’s significant contributions to science and his inspiring journey from a small village to global recognition.
The Raman Effect, a revolutionary finding in the scattering of light, earned Raman the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 and cemented India’s place on the world stage of scientific advancement. His research also extended to X-rays and the colours of the sea.
This year’s theme, “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat,” underscores India’s commitment to nurturing future generations of scientists. The central celebrations are being held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
Raman’s exceptional academic career included completing his intermediate exams at just 13, earning his MSc with highest distinctions, and holding prestigious positions at Presidency College, Madras, the University of Calcutta, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His work extended beyond the Raman Effect, encompassing the acoustics of musical instruments and the discovery (with a student) that photons possess angular momentum. His legacy continues to inspire scientific research globally.
