**KINSHASA, DRC** – A deadly and rapidly spreading illness has claimed over 50 lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over the past five weeks, leaving health officials scrambling for answers. The disease, first identified in three children who had consumed bat, has already infected over 1,100 people across two outbreaks in Equateur and Western Congo provinces.
As of today, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports over 1,096 confirmed cases and at least 60 deaths. The alarming speed of the illness is a major concern; most victims succumb within 48 hours of symptom onset. “The disease’s ability to kill people within 48 hours is really worrying,” stated Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital.
Initial symptoms include fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding, later progressing to diarrhea, body aches, intense thirst, and joint pain. Children have reportedly experienced additional symptoms such as incessant crying and nosebleeds.
Tests have ruled out several known hemorrhagic fever viruses, including Ebola, Marburg, dengue, and yellow fever, leaving the cause of the outbreak a mystery. The WHO is currently investigating whether the illness is a novel infection or the result of a toxic agent. A WHO spokesperson stated, “We are looking into whether it is another infection or whether it is some toxic agent. We have to see what can be done and at what point WHO can support.” The investigation is ongoing.
