**Kottayam, Kerala –** The centuries-old murals adorning the Ettumanur Mahadeva Temple in Kerala are undergoing a significant restoration project, officials announced Thursday. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), in collaboration with Vasthuvidya Gurukulam, Aranmula, is undertaking the ₹54-lakh conservation effort to revive the temple’s artistic heritage.
The murals, dating back to the 18th century, depict scenes from Hindu mythology, including the Ramayana and Mahabharata, showcasing unique Dravidian artistic styles. Notable works include the Ananthasayanam mural, one of the largest in Kerala, and the Gopika Vastrakshepam, which features four Gopikas pleading with Lord Krishna. While some sections of the Gopika Vastrakshepam were previously defaced, the restoration project aims to address this damage.
Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan shared a video update on the progress, highlighting the restoration of the Ananthasayanam mural, which is nearing completion and will soon have a formal inauguration ceremony. The project will cover all prominent murals in subsequent phases. Temple officials also point to the depiction of Nataraja (Dancing Shiva) as a particularly outstanding piece, noting the murals’ international recognition after being documented by European art critic Stella Kramrisch.
The Ettumanur Mahadeva Temple, famed for its architectural splendor and intricate woodwork, is also known for its “Ezhara Ponnana” (seven-and-a-half golden elephants), a significant symbol paraded annually during the temple festival. The restoration project aims to preserve the temple’s cultural richness for future generations.
