HOUSTON, TX – Mississippi State (6-3) defeated Rice (2-6) in their opening game of the Astros Foundation College Classic, held at Minute Maid Park. The Bulldogs’ victory came on the strength of strong pitching and timely hitting, securing a 3-0 win.
Left-hander Pico Kohn (2-0) started for Mississippi State, delivering another stellar performance. In his five innings of work, Kohn allowed only five hits and struck out seven while walking none. Rice countered with their Friday starter, Davion Hickson, who despite a solid outing (allowing only one run) was unable to prevent the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when Mississippi State broke through. A balk and a series of hits, including a single by Stallman, led to three runs. The Bulldogs’ defense then held strong, shutting down Rice’s attempts to rally.
