**Imphal, Manipur –** The surrender of 246 weapons by the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, a move made following a seven-day ultimatum issued by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, has been dismissed as a mere publicity stunt by Kuki-Zo organizations. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) issued a joint statement on February 27th, claiming the surrendered weapons represent only 5% of the estimated 6,000 weapons looted from the Imphal Valley. They argue that the timing of the surrender, immediately after a meeting with the Governor, suggests a calculated attempt to improve the group’s public image and gain legitimacy.
The Kuki-Zo groups hold Arambai Tenggol responsible for the deaths of over 230 members of their community and reiterate their demand for a separate administration. While over 300 weapons were surrendered during the Governor’s ultimatum period, primarily in the valley districts, the Kuki-Zo groups remain unconvinced. They highlight that security forces have already recovered thousands of weapons since the outbreak of violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups last May.
Chief Secretary P.K. Singh stated that authorities would take action after the seven-day surrender period ended. The situation in Manipur remains tense, with President’s rule in effect since February 13th following Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation. Over 250 people have been killed, and thousands displaced in the ongoing ethnic conflict.
