Thu Feb 27 22:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Kerala MLA Condemns Planned Cuts to Higher Secondary Teaching Posts
**Thiruvananthapuram, February 28, 2025** – P. Ubaidulla, MLA, has criticized the Kerala government’s plan to abolish 420 higher secondary teaching posts, citing insufficient student numbers as the reason. He inaugurated a two-day protest organized by the Kerala Higher Secondary Teachers’ Union (KHSTU) outside the Directorate of General Education on Thursday.
Ubaidulla highlighted the irony of overcrowding in classrooms (with up to 70 students) while simultaneously eliminating teaching positions due to allegedly low student numbers in certain batches. He challenged the General Education Minister to explain how education would continue in newly constructed schools funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board if the proposed cuts went ahead.
The KHSTU argues that instead of abolishing posts, the government should address the issue by limiting class sizes to 50 students. This, they claim, would increase student numbers per batch in government schools and negate the need for job cuts. The union’s protest focuses on the redeployment of permanent teachers following the alleged reduction of student numbers in some higher secondary batches to below 25. O. Shoukathali, KHSTU general secretary, presided over the protest, which also included a speech from Beemapally Rasheed, Indian Union Muslim League State unit secretary.
