Fri Feb 28 14:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Buttler Steps Down as England White-Ball Captain

**Karachi, Pakistan –** Jos Buttler has announced his resignation as England’s white-ball captain, effective at the end of the ongoing Champions Trophy. The 34-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman cited the team’s recent poor performance and early exit from the tournament as the primary reason for his decision.

Buttler, who took over the captaincy in 2022, led England to victory in the T20 World Cup that year. However, the team’s form has since declined significantly, including a group-stage exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup and a semi-final loss in the T20 World Cup. Their recent 0-3 ODI series defeat against India and subsequent losses to Australia and Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy sealed the fate of his captaincy.

“It’s the right decision for me, it’s the right decision for the team,” Buttler stated in a press conference. He expressed his disappointment but also acknowledged the honor of captaining his country. He hoped a new captain could work effectively with coach Brendon McCullum to revitalize the team’s performance.

Despite the arrival of McCullum as white-ball coach in 2025, the partnership failed to produce the desired results, with England winning only one of their last ten white-ball matches. Buttler’s overall win-loss record as captain places him second-worst amongst England captains with a minimum of 15 games. He captained England in 44 ODIs and 51 T20Is, achieving 18 and 26 wins respectively.

The ECB will now begin the search for a new white-ball captain to lead England through the next phase of their international cricket journey.
