Fri Feb 28 14:32:35 UTC 2025: ## Buttler Steps Down as England’s Limited-Overs Captain After Champions Trophy Exit
**LAHORE, PAKISTAN** – England’s limited-overs captain, Jos Buttler, has announced his resignation following England’s disappointing early exit from the Champions Trophy. The 34-year-old cited the team’s recent string of failures in major ICC tournaments as the primary reason for his decision.
Buttler, who led England to T20 World Cup glory in 2022, admitted that the team’s elimination from the Champions Trophy, following defeats to Australia and Afghanistan, marked the end of his captaincy tenure. He acknowledged the pressure of recent results, including a significant number of losses in ODIs since taking over from Eoin Morgan in 2022.
“It’s the right decision for the team and hopefully somebody else who can come in and work closely alongside Baz [coach Brendon McCullum] to take the team back to where it needs to be,” Buttler stated at a press conference.
His resignation comes after a period of declining performance for the English limited-overs side, which also includes failing to retain their T20 and ODI World Cup titles. The decision follows a similar move by Australian coach Matthew Mott last year after England’s T20 World Cup semi-final exit. The search for Buttler’s successor is now underway.
