Fri Feb 28 05:04:03 UTC 2025: **Bengaluru’s Street Markets Get Heritage Status in BBMP Survey**
**Bengaluru, February 28, 2025** – The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has for the first time categorized street vending zones in its latest survey, designating several markets as heritage sites. The survey, conducted using a mobile application, classified markets into seven categories: Heritage Market, Natural Market, Bus Stand Market, Platform Market, Footpath Market, Weekly Market, and Others.
The South Zone report identifies Gandhi Bazaar, Kalasipalya Market, V.V. Puram, Vijayanagar (various areas), Byatarayanapura, Cholurpalya, Manjunath Nagar, and Kadirenahalli as heritage markets. While data for other zones is not yet public, an official stated that at least five locations in each zone have received this designation. The classification was determined by enumerators based on observations of historical significance, such as proximity to old temples or buildings. However, the “heritage” designation does not currently grant any special privileges to these markets.
The survey also categorized markets based on vendor types (Natural Markets), location near bus stands (Bus Stand Markets), frequency (Weekly Markets), and location on footpaths or platforms. The BBMP has completed the survey in eight zones and submitted reports to the respective Zonal Town Vending Committees (TVCs) for review, considering objections from vendors. The objection period for the South Zone has been extended until March 3rd.
