Fri Feb 28 10:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Virginia American Water Customers to See Lower Bills Despite Rate Hike Approval
**ALEXANDRIA, Va. – February 26, 2025** – Virginia American Water customers will see a decrease in their monthly water and wastewater bills despite the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) approving a $14.6 million annual revenue increase for the company. The increase, effective May 1, 2024, is a result of over $110 million in infrastructure investments in treatment systems and distribution upgrades.
The approved rates are actually lower than the interim rates implemented in May 2024. The average customer using 4,000 gallons of water per month will see a reduction of approximately $2.00 on their water bill, while wastewater customers will see a decrease of about $1.50. Credits, including interest, will be issued to customers within 90 days to reflect the difference between the interim and permanent rates.
“We are committed to making the necessary investments to continue to provide high-quality service and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations,” said Laura Runkle, President of Virginia American Water. The company serves approximately 350,000 people.
The SCC’s decision balances the need for infrastructure improvements with affordability concerns for consumers. While the rate increase allows Virginia American Water to recoup its investments, the resulting lower bills for customers signify a positive regulatory outcome. The company has highlighted its existing bill paying assistance programs for customers who may need additional support. Further information on the new rates is available on the company’s website.
