**CHENNAI, February 28, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) demolished two temples in T. Nagar on Friday as part of its flood prevention efforts. The Renuka Parameswari and Vinayagar temples, built 48 years ago within the Mambalam canal, were obstructing the flow of water, causing significant flooding in the area during the recent northeast monsoon.
Twenty residential neighborhoods, including Giriappa Road, Nakkeerar Colony, and M.K. Radha Nagar, experienced severe flooding due to the blockage. After discussions with temple authorities, an agreement was reached to relocate the idols. The GCC plans to fence off the canal following the removal of the encroachments.
