Fri Feb 28 13:38:30 UTC 2025: ## Erode Councillors Demand Property Tax Reduction

**Erode, February 28, 2025** – Erode Corporation councillors from across the political spectrum, including the DMK, AIADMK, Congress, and independents, jointly petitioned Mayor S. Nagarathinam on Friday, demanding a reduction in property taxes. They argue that Erode’s property taxes are higher than those in larger corporations like Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli, despite slower infrastructure development.

Councillor N. Dhandapani highlighted the disparity, stating that while Erode is a selection-grade corporation, its tax rates surpass those of Special Grade A corporations. He advocated for a slab-based tax system and recalled councillors’ opposition to a state government tax hike in 2018, warning of public backlash if taxes continued to rise without visible improvements.

The petition follows an urgent council meeting where the majority of councillors voiced their opposition to the current tax rates. While 48 resolutions were passed, a resolution regarding the relocation of a K. Kamaraj statue faced opposition, and another councillor complained about a lack of communication regarding ward-level work. The council meeting was chaired by the Mayor, with the Corporation Commissioner H.S. Srikanth and Deputy Mayor V. Selvaraj in attendance.
