**Bengaluru, February 28, 2025** – The threat of a property tax auction has spurred a massive wave of payments in Bengaluru. Facing the prospect of their properties being auctioned by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), 555 out of 608 property owners with outstanding dues cleared their arrears, generating ₹18 crore in revenue for the civic body.
The auction, initially scheduled for February 13th, was postponed due to a lack of bidders. However, the mere announcement proved effective in prompting tax defaulters to act, preventing their properties from being seized.
BBMP Special Commissioner (Revenue) Munish Moudgil reported that the body successfully recovered 90% (₹18 crore) of the ₹20 crore owed by the first batch of defaulters. He expressed confidence in collecting the remaining dues and announced plans to auction a further 3,000 properties.
This intensified collection drive follows the November 2024 expiration of a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme that waived compounding interest and reduced penalties. The OTS, initially ending in July, was extended twice due to public demand. Before the scheme’s conclusion, the BBMP attached 81,644 properties belonging to 2,06,753 defaulters with a combined outstanding of ₹329.15 crore. The BBMP is now implementing stricter enforcement measures, including auctions, to recover outstanding dues.
