Thu Feb 27 04:08:04 UTC 2025: ## Belagavi on High Alert as Bird Flu Spreads in Neighboring Maharashtra

**Belagavi, Karnataka, February 27, 2025** – The Belagavi district administration has launched a comprehensive preventative program to combat the spread of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) following an outbreak in Latur district, Maharashtra. With over 2.64 million broiler chickens in the district, authorities are taking no chances.

Seven checkpoints have been established along the Karnataka-Maharashtra and Karnataka-Goa borders to screen poultry products entering the district. Teams are working around the clock, inspecting chicken, eggs, meat, and byproducts. Simultaneously, close monitoring of migratory and other bird populations near water bodies is underway. Suspected cases of bird deaths are being sent to Bengaluru for testing.

The district is actively collecting samples – serum, cloacal, tracheal, and environmental – for disease detection. A dedicated nodal officer, technical assistant, and 15 veterinary nodal officers have been appointed, supported by 33 Rapid Action Force (RAF) teams for field operations. Stockpiles of disinfectants, PPE kits, and other essential materials have been assembled.

Workshops are being conducted to educate poultry farmers and the public about avian influenza prevention. While no cases have been reported in Belagavi, the administration emphasizes the importance of thoroughly cooking poultry products to above 70° Celsius. Residents are urged to contact their local veterinarian if they observe unusual bird deaths.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan expressed confidence in the district’s preparedness, highlighting the collaborative efforts of various departments. Zilla Panchayat CEO Rahul Shindhe reassured the public, emphasizing that while vigilance is crucial, there is no need for undue alarm regarding egg and chicken consumption if properly cooked.
