Wed Feb 26 19:47:59 UTC 2025: ## Hepatitis A Outbreak Prompts School Closure and Increased Health Measures in Kochi
**KOCHI, Kerala, February 27, 2025** – A surge in Hepatitis A cases in Kalamassery municipality has led to the temporary closure of a private engineering institute and intensified public health measures. Offline classes at the institute were suspended two weeks ago after several students tested positive for the virus. While water samples from the institute’s wells showed no contamination, the college has chlorinated the wells and shifted to online classes until the situation improves.
The municipality has also seen cases in the HMT Estate and Kangarapady wards, although the number remains relatively low, with approximately five active cases reported as of Wednesday. Health officials are conducting inspections of local eateries and juice shops to ensure hygiene standards are met.
This latest outbreak follows a larger spike in Hepatitis A cases in December 2024, which prompted a municipal-wide screening camp. Residents in affected areas are advised to drink only boiled water and practice strict hygiene, including thorough handwashing before and after meals and toilet use, and avoiding stale or uncovered food. Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are actively working in the community to promote these preventative measures.
