NEW DELHI, February 27, 2025 – Six-time MLA Mohan Singh Bisht is set to become the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly on Thursday. His election will proceed without the participation of the Opposition, following the suspension of 21 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, including the Leader of the Opposition, for disrupting the House. Only one AAP MLA avoided suspension, but was absent from the Assembly.
The Assembly will then continue its discussion of a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report detailing a ₹2,002-crore loss due to the flawed implementation of Delhi’s scrapped liquor policy. Another CAG report, concerning renovations to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s former residence, is also expected to be tabled.
The BJP plans to form several legislative panels in the coming days, including the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which will examine the CAG reports and present its findings to the House. The BJP’s election campaign had included a promise to investigate 14 CAG reports alleging financial irregularities under the previous AAP government.
Bisht’s election from the Mustafabad constituency, affected by the 2020 Delhi riots, highlights his significance within the BJP. His influence was evident in the party’s concession to his demands during the recent ticket distribution process, after an initial attempt to replace him resulted in his threat to run as an independent candidate.
