Thu Feb 27 03:38:22 UTC 2025: **Andhra Pradesh Student Group Opposes UGC’s Proposed VC Appointment Regulations**

VIJAYAWADA, February 27, 2025 – The Andhra Pradesh Committee of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has urged the state government to reject the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) draft regulations for appointing Vice-Chancellors (VCs). In a letter to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the SFI expressed concerns that the proposals grant excessive power to Governors, potentially leading to politically motivated appointments and undermining the federal structure.

The SFI criticized the proposal to allow the appointment of VCs from non-academic backgrounds, arguing this would create a disconnect between leadership and the academic community. They also raised objections to a provision allowing individuals with master’s degrees but without UGC-NET qualifications to become Assistant Professors, fearing a decline in academic standards.

Pointing to opposition from other states like Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Jharkhand, the SFI called on the Andhra Pradesh government to follow suit and pass a resolution against the UGC draft during the current Assembly sessions.
