Thu Feb 27 15:17:07 UTC 2025: ## Rebuilt Check-Dam Protects Tamil Nadu Farmland

**Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu – February 27, 2025** – A newly rebuilt check-dam in Thamizhakurichi, Tamil Nadu, promises to safeguard over 200 acres of farmland from future floods. The 120-meter-long structure, which replaced a flood-damaged 80-meter dam, was completed at a cost of ₹9.50 crore under the World Bank-aided Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation Project (TNIAMP).

Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Additional Chief Secretary and Project Director of TNIAMP, inspected the completed project. The original check-dam, built in 1950 across the Pachchaiyar River, was severely damaged in the 2023 floods. The extended length of the new dam aims to prevent similar damage in the future. The dam diverts excess floodwater from the Pachchaiyar River, which originates in the Western Ghats, into the Thamizhakurichi tank, irrigating the surrounding agricultural land.
