**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, February 27, 2025** – The Indian Railways successfully transported an estimated five crore devotees to the recently concluded Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this figure Thursday, highlighting the unprecedented scale of the operation.
More than 16,000 trains were operated for the pilgrimage, a significant increase from the approximately 4,000 trains used during the 2019 Kumbh Mela. Mr. Vaishnaw attributed the success to meticulous planning over two and a half years and the collaborative efforts of various state and central government departments. He emphasized the “Mahayagna of unity” demonstrated by the collective work.
The railways invested approximately ₹5,000 crore in infrastructure improvements for the Maha Kumbh. This included the construction of over 21 flyovers and underpasses, a new bridge over the Ganges River, improved holding areas at stations, and the introduction of new foot-over-bridges. Mr. Vaishnaw commended railway workers for their dedication in ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience for pilgrims. The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13th, concluded on February 26th.
