LOS ANGELES, CA – Amidst a surge in print Bible sales and growing interest in faith-based entertainment, Amazon Prime Video is set to launch its highly anticipated biblical epic, “House of David,” on February 27th. The series, developed by Jon Erwin (director of the 2023 hit “Jesus Revolution”), chronicles the life of King David, from his humble beginnings as a shepherd boy to his rise as Israel’s most celebrated king.
The ten-part series will premiere with three episodes, followed by a weekly release. Filmed on location in Greece, “House of David” offers a sweeping portrayal of David’s journey, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of King Saul, whom he is destined to replace. Erwin, who conceived the project after visiting King David’s tomb in Jerusalem as a teenager, described it as a lifelong dream and the culmination of years of work building the necessary filmmaking skills.
He highlighted the enduring appeal of David’s story, calling it “the original hero’s journey,” and emphasizing David’s relatability as a flawed yet ultimately inspiring figure – “a man after God’s own heart,” despite his mistakes. Erwin believes the series taps into a growing audience appetite for uplifting and inspiring content in a challenging world. The success of “Jesus Revolution” further bolsters this belief, indicating a shift in mainstream Hollywood’s recognition of the demand for faith-based entertainment. Erwin attributed the opportunity to create a Prime Video series of this scale to the loud and clear message from the audience for more family-friendly, hopeful content.
