NEW YORK – Despite a nationwide egg shortage driven by avian influenza, McDonald’s has announced it will not add surcharges to its egg-based menu items. This decision contrasts with other restaurants that have implemented price increases due to the soaring cost of eggs.
Michael Gonda, McDonald’s chief impact officer for North America, confirmed the company’s stance in a LinkedIn post, emphasizing that McDonald’s uses 100% cage-free, U.S.-sourced eggs. The announcement coincides with the launch of a new “Breakfast Comes First” campaign celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Egg McMuffin. The campaign includes app-based deals such as a $1 Egg McMuffin or Sausage McMuffin with Egg, and a buy-one-get-one-free Sausage McMuffin with Egg offer.
McDonald’s CFO Ian Borden had previously hinted at a significant breakfast-focused campaign during the company’s recent earnings call, highlighting the strong performance of breakfast sales. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store has also publicly stated it will not be adding egg surcharges.
Egg prices have surged 53% annually and 15.2% in January alone, according to the Labor Department, largely due to the bird flu outbreaks impacting egg supply. The increase accounted for a significant portion of the overall rise in food prices last month.
