Thu Feb 27 16:20:59 UTC 2025: ## Mangaluru City Corporation Hands Over Maintenance of Gujjara Kere and Playground
**Mangaluru, February 27, 2025:** The Mangaluru City Corporation council concluded its final meeting of the current five-year term on Thursday with decisions to hand over the maintenance of two public spaces to external organizations.
Gujjara Kere, a three-acre waterbody renovated under the Smart City mission, will now be maintained by the managing committee of the Halekote Mariyamma temple. This decision followed a request from the temple’s executive officer, subject to nine conditions imposed by the corporation, including a ban on advertising around the waterbody and the committee bearing all maintenance costs.
Controversy surrounded the council’s decision to entrust the maintenance of a playground in Santosh Nagara to the Veera Savarkar Friends youth organization. Congress member A.C. Vinayraj objected, citing the organization’s lack of registration and the corporation’s capacity to maintain the playground itself. However, the Mayor, Manoj Kumar, defended the decision, stating that there’s no rule requiring such organizations to be registered. The decision was ultimately approved.
