**THANJAVUR, February 27, 2025** – A protest erupted at a Kumbakonam Corporation meeting on Thursday when spouses and male relatives of 19 women councillors were barred from entering the meeting hall. The women, primarily members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), staged a demonstration after receiving calls from their family members who were denied entry to the urgent meeting held at the old Corporation office.
The councillors, led by Mayor K. Saravanan, initially joined the meeting but then left to join their protesting relatives in the corridor. They confronted Commissioner K. Balu, demanding an explanation for the exclusion. Deputy Mayor S.P. Thamizhazhagan intervened, offering to accommodate the men in his chamber until the meeting’s conclusion, thereby resolving the protest.
