Thu Feb 27 01:49:26 UTC 2025: ## ITBP Denies Gender Change Requests for Troopers

**New Delhi, February 27, 2025** – The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has issued a directive prohibiting its personnel from undergoing gender change procedures, citing concerns about psychological impact and inconsistencies with recruitment standards.

The decision follows a request from a female trooper seeking permission for a gender change operation. After consulting with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which in turn consulted with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the ITBP sought the opinion of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) medical directorate.

The CAPFs medical wing advised against permitting gender changes, arguing that it could negatively affect the psychology and behavior of personnel. Furthermore, the medical wing noted that post-transition, individuals would no longer meet the force’s physical requirements for either male or female recruits.

This opinion has now been communicated to all ITBP field units, establishing a policy against granting such requests. While one CAPF, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), previously allowed a similar transition, officials from other CAPFs, including the ITBP, have stated that the issue requires further discussion and policy development to address the challenges posed by altering physical attributes after recruitment. Current recruitment rules stipulate specific physical and mental requirements tailored to the operational demands of the force.
