Thu Feb 27 04:39:14 UTC 2025: ## UN Chief to Visit Bangladesh, Pledge Continued Support for Rohingya Refugees

**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Dhaka from March 13-16 to reaffirm the UN’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its efforts to manage the Rohingya refugee crisis. The visit follows an invitation from Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus.

In a letter to Mr. Yunus, Mr. Guterres expressed concern over the impact of the Rohingya crisis on Bangladesh and the region, as well as the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. He pledged to continue working with regional actors and ASEAN towards a political solution in Myanmar that allows for the safe return of Rohingya refugees.

The UN chief also announced that he has instructed UN Country Teams in both Bangladesh and Myanmar to maximize humanitarian aid and livelihood support for communities in Rakhine. He expressed anticipation for the upcoming “High-level Conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar,” hoping it will galvanize global attention and contribute to finding solutions.

Mr. Guterres reiterated the UN’s strong solidarity with Bangladesh and its support for the ongoing transition process under Chief Adviser Yunus’ leadership. According to the UNHCR, approximately one million Rohingya refugees currently reside in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, the world’s largest refugee camp. These refugees fled Myanmar in 2017 due to persecution, violence, and human rights violations.
