Thu Feb 27 16:09:48 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Closes Down Most Micro Composting Centers Amidst Resident Complaints
**CHENNAI, February 27, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council voted Thursday to shutter the majority of its micro composting centers and waste material recovery facilities located in residential areas. This decision follows widespread resident complaints regarding unpleasant odors and public health concerns stemming from the proximity of waste processing to homes.
The GCC will close 168 out of 190 micro composting centers situated in densely populated residential zones. Similarly, 88 out of 137 waste material recovery facilities in residential areas will also be shut down. Waste processing units operating within crematoriums will also be closed to address public health issues.
In other news from the council meeting, a resolution was passed to regulate trade license fees for grocery stores. This move is expected to provide significant relief to smaller, traditional “kirana” stores, which form the backbone of Chennai’s domestic grocery retail sector, by lowering the cost of obtaining a trade license.
