**Bengaluru, February 27, 2025** – The cost of eating out in Bengaluru is skyrocketing, impacting residents across the city. A recent announcement by the Bruhat Bengaluru Hoteliers Association (BBHA) revealed a projected 10-15% increase in filter coffee prices, driven by a ₹100 per kilogram surge in coffee powder costs and anticipated milk price hikes. This is just one example of a broader trend affecting all types of eateries, from humble Darshinis to upscale restaurants.
Rising operational costs, including labor, rent, and commodity prices, are cited as the primary cause. Interviews with young professionals reveal the strain this is placing on their budgets. An IT professional, Rohit M., reported his daily food expenses have doubled, now reaching ₹500-700. Similar experiences were shared by an engineering student and other IT professionals, highlighting the increasing difficulty of affording daily meals outside the home. Even those who skip meals to save money are struggling.
While some eatery owners report no drop in customer numbers, attributing this to busy lifestyles, the financial burden on consumers is undeniable. Online ordering, in particular, adds to the expense, with restaurants often charging significantly more on online platforms to account for commissions.
Sandeep Sadanandan, Head of Culinary at Byg Ventures, acknowledged the food inflation but argued that increased costs aren’t translating into higher profits for restaurants due to intense competition. The sheer number of new eateries opening constantly is diluting profits, he explained.
BBHA president P.C. Rao maintained that Bengaluru remains relatively affordable compared to other Indian cities, citing examples of inexpensive meals at some establishments. However, he emphasized the price difference between dining in and ordering online, with online platforms taking a significant cut of restaurant sales. This ultimately forces restaurants to increase their online menu prices. The rising cost of eating out is becoming a significant concern for Bengaluru residents, especially young professionals juggling busy schedules and limited resources.
