Thu Feb 27 10:52:11 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Farmers Condemn Delay in Mahadayi River Water Dispute Resolution
**Belagavi, Karnataka, February 27, 2025** – Farmers’ associations in Karnataka have strongly criticized the Union Government’s decision to extend the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal’s (MWDT) term by six months, calling the delay unacceptable. The MWDT, established in 2010 to resolve the water-sharing dispute between Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, has been granted multiple extensions. This latest extension follows objections filed by all three states to previous awards.
Leaders of various farmer groups expressed frustration over the prolonged wait for a resolution, emphasizing the detrimental impact on northern Karnataka’s agricultural sector. Vijay Kulkarni of the Kalasa Bandori agitation committee stated that the people of the region have waited 15 years for a final award and urged immediate action. Sidagouda Modagi of Krishik Samaj highlighted the concurrent struggle against Karnataka’s plan to divert Ghataprabha river water to the Dharwad industrial area, further stressing the region’s water vulnerability. Prakash Naik of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha echoed the sentiment, urging the BJP governments in the three states to work collaboratively to find a solution.
The central committee of Kannada organizations has also appealed to the Karnataka government to appoint a senior minister to oversee all interstate disputes, suggesting the reappointment of H.K. Patil, who previously held this position. They further demanded the reconstitution of the State-level commission on border and river disputes.
While the tribunal requested a one-year extension to the Jal Shakti Ministry, it was granted six months. The ongoing dispute underscores the critical need for a swift and equitable resolution to ensure the water security of northern Karnataka and prevent further conflict among the riparian states.
