**KOCHI, KERALA – February 27, 2025** – Kumbalam railway station in the Ernakulam-Alappuzha corridor has received a significant upgrade with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Electronic Interlocking (EI) system. The Thiruvananthapuram Division of Indian Railways implemented the upgrade as part of a larger initiative to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
The new system replaces the outdated relay-based mechanical signalling system, offering improved reliability and flexibility. Key features include electronic interlocking, a visual display unit replacing the old control panel, upgraded points, and replacement of all legacy signalling and telecom equipment. This is the 33rd of 68 block stations in the division to receive this technological advancement. The upgrade is expected to significantly improve train operations and safety in the region.
