**Chennai, February 27, 2025** – The Department of Posts is revolutionizing postal services in Chennai with the implementation of a paperless e-KYC (electronic know your customer) system. This new system, currently undergoing a trial run in 20 head post offices across the Chennai city region, including Chennai, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai, allows customers to open savings accounts and conduct other transactions using Aadhaar-based biometric authentication.
The initiative aims to significantly reduce paperwork and waiting times at post office counters. The digital process will be used for opening various accounts, including recurring deposits and the Selvamagal Semippu Thittam, a savings scheme for girls. Customers will also be able to make digital payments through their India Postal Payments Bank accounts.
Postmaster General G. Natarajan stated that approximately 700 biometric devices will be procured to support the system’s expansion to all 570 post offices in the Chennai city region within a month.
To further promote the Selvamagal Semippu Thittam, special camps will be held in Chennai North and Tambaram on February 28th and March 10th respectively. The Chennai City Region (CCR) has already opened 50,000 such accounts since January and aims to add another 10,000 by March. Since its launch in 2015, the scheme has amassed over 10 lakh accounts in the region.
