**Kannur, Kerala, February 27, 2025** – Sherin, currently serving a life sentence for the 2009 murder of Bhaskara Karanavar, has been charged with assaulting a fellow inmate at the Kannur women’s jail. The incident, which occurred on Monday, February 24th, involved Sherin and another inmate, Shabna, allegedly attacking K.M. Julie, a foreign national, as she collected water. Police reports state Sherin pushed Julie while Shabna verbally abused and shoved her.
This latest incident adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding Sherin. Recently, the Kerala Cabinet recommended to the Governor that her sentence be commuted after 14 years, a decision that sparked widespread criticism due to its perceived preferential treatment compared to other long-serving prisoners. While officials defended the recommendation, Sherin’s history of behavioral issues in prison raised concerns.
Sherin was convicted for the murder of her father-in-law, Karanavar, in a case that initially appeared to be a robbery. However, an analysis of Sherin’s phone records, revealing 55 calls to her accomplice Basit Ali, and the discovery of Basit’s fingerprint at the crime scene were key to solving the case. Both Sherin and Basit Ali received life sentences.
The new assault charge further fuels the debate surrounding the leniency shown to Sherin and highlights ongoing concerns about her conduct within the prison system.
