NEW DELHI, February 27, 2025 – Congress leaders have pledged a united front against the BJP government in Assam ahead of next year’s state assembly elections. In a meeting held Thursday in New Delhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi emphasized the need for a collective effort, warning that any dissent will result in disciplinary action.
The meeting, attended by senior party leaders including K.C. Venugopal and Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah, reviewed the party’s election preparations. Mr. Gandhi reportedly instructed party officials to take swift action against anyone undermining the party’s strategy. While speculation of leadership changes had circulated, the AICC leadership reiterated its commitment to collective leadership.
The party leadership assured Assam’s Congress leaders that alliance decisions with regional parties would largely reflect the state unit’s recommendations. The focus, they stressed, will be on highlighting alleged misgovernance and corruption under the BJP government, and addressing public concerns.
Addressing the challenge of increasing polarization and the redrawing of constituency boundaries, Mr. Kharge expressed confidence in the people of Assam rejecting the BJP’s approach. He stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the people of Assam are looking towards the Congress for change.
