Wed Feb 26 16:51:43 UTC 2025: **Trade Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Proposed Labour Codes**

NEW DELHI, Feb 26, 2025 – The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), a major trade union, has vowed to launch nationwide protests, including a potential all-India strike, if the central government proceeds with the implementation of the four new Labour Codes. The AICCTU, backed by the CPI (ML-Liberation), passed a resolution condemning the codes as “anti-worker” and accusing the Narendra Modi government of pushing them through despite widespread opposition.

The resolution highlights concerns that the codes, viewed as pro-corporate, are being implemented despite resistance from workers and coincide with calls from prominent business leaders for significantly increased work hours. The AICCTU specifically cited lobbying efforts by Infosys’ Narayana Murthy and L&T’s Subrahmanyan for 70-90 hour work weeks, criticizing the government’s lack of condemnation.

The AICCTU conference elected Rajiv Dimri as its new national general secretary and V. Shankar as national president. The union has pledged to collaborate with other trade unions to oppose the Labour Codes and will resort to a nationwide strike as a last resort to prevent their implementation.
