**TOMS RIVER, NJ** – Anthony Knox, a three-time New Jersey state wrestling champion and Cornell University recruit, has been disqualified from the upcoming Region 7 Wrestling Tournament following an altercation in the stands at the District 25 tournament. The NJSIAA, New Jersey’s governing body for high school athletics, announced the disqualification Tuesday, effectively ending Knox’s high school wrestling career.
The incident occurred last Saturday at Collingswood High School during the District 25 tournament, where a fight broke out in the stands between fans of St. John Vianney High School (Knox’s school) and West Deptford. Video footage circulating on social media appears to show Knox involved in the altercation.
NJSIAA Executive Director Colleen Maguire stated that Knox violated the association’s sportsmanship policy and rules regarding leaving the bench area during an altercation. While Maguire acknowledged the severity of the decision for the senior wrestler, she emphasized the need to uphold the integrity of high school athletics and ensure all participants adhere to the same standards.
Knox, who was the No. 1 seed at 126 pounds for the Region 7 tournament, will no longer compete. His disqualification will lead to a reseeding of the 126-pound weight class. The Region 7 Tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Lacey Township High School.
Knox, a nationally ranked wrestler with a 140-1 career record, was aiming to become New Jersey’s fifth four-time state champion. His only loss came during his freshman year against an out-of-state opponent. At least two individuals were reportedly taken into custody by Collingswood police following the brawl, which temporarily halted the tournament. Police are still investigating the incident. St. John Vianney school officials and Knox’s family have yet to comment publicly.
