Wed Feb 26 06:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Millions of Public Pensioners to Receive Back Pay from Social Security Fairness Act

**Washington, D.C. –** Over 3.2 million retired public servants, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers, will receive retroactive Social Security benefits as early as next month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced Tuesday. The expedited payments are a result of the Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law last December, which eliminates policies that previously reduced or withheld full Social Security benefits for those also receiving public pensions.

The SSA will begin issuing retroactive payments dating back to December 2023 by the end of March, with increased monthly payments beginning in April. Acting SSA Commissioner Lee Dudek attributed the swift implementation to President Trump’s prioritization of the Act, noting that most payments will be processed automatically. Only complex cases will experience the previously projected one-year processing delay.

The amount of the retroactive payment and the increase in monthly benefits will vary depending on individual circumstances and benefit types. The SSA urges recipients to wait until April to inquire about the status of their retroactive payment and directs those seeking further information to the Social Security Fairness Act website.
