Wed Feb 26 07:06:28 UTC 2025: ## Military Plane Crash Kills Dozens in Khartoum Amidst Sudan’s Ongoing War
**Khartoum, Sudan** – A Sudanese military plane crashed in a residential area on the outskirts of Khartoum on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people, including several military officers and civilians. The incident occurred during takeoff from Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman.
Military sources, speaking to Reuters, attributed the crash to likely technical failure. Among the deceased is reportedly Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum. The military confirmed the deaths of both military personnel and civilians in a statement, adding that the injured were receiving medical treatment and that the resulting fire was contained.
Residents described a loud explosion and reported damage to homes and power outages in surrounding neighborhoods. The Karari Resistance Committee reported transporting 10 bodies and several injured to al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman.
The crash comes amidst significant military advances against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in central Sudan and Khartoum. The army and RSF have been locked in a brutal conflict since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of over 12 million people, creating a major humanitarian crisis. The conflict escalated further on Monday when the RSF declared the formation of a parallel government in areas under its control, prompting a warning from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of further escalation. The RSF also claimed responsibility for shooting down a Russian-made plane in Nyala, South Darfur, the day before the crash in Khartoum. The ongoing conflict and this latest tragedy underscore the increasingly dire situation in Sudan.
