**Chennai, February 26, 2025** – The Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) proposal to conduct Class 10 board exams twice a year, while lauded as a stress-reducer for students, has raised concerns among Chennai school teachers regarding increased workload.
The CBSE’s move, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, aims to improve student performance. A draft policy released on Tuesday is open for public feedback until March 9. While educators acknowledge the reduced pressure on students, they express apprehension about the doubled workload. K.R. Maalathi of Auuro Educational Services noted the positive impact on students but highlighted the potential for teachers to work significantly longer hours to accommodate exams in February and May. She suggested a Cambridge-style exam model might have offered a smoother transition.
Several teachers and school principals echoed these concerns. One unnamed teacher from a private CBSE school questioned the rationale behind two exams covering the entire syllabus in quick succession, predicting a significant toll on teachers. P. Vishnucharan, correspondent of Shree Niketan schools, highlighted the added strain on teachers involved in exam correction and invigilation. The lack of clarity on the academic structure further adds to their uncertainty.
Many schools are holding meetings with teachers and parents to discuss the implications of the proposed changes before submitting their feedback to the CBSE.
