**Hyderabad, February 26, 2025** – Devotees observing Maha Shivaratri, a significant Hindu festival honoring Lord Shiva, can choose from three types of fasts, according to spiritual leaders. These range from a complete Nirjala Vrat (fast without food or water) to a more lenient Samapt Vrat, which allows for the consumption of sattvic foods. A Phalhara Vrat allows fruits and dry fruits.
Spiritual experts advise those undertaking the fast to prepare by consuming only sattvic foods on the preceding Trayodashi. The Phalhara Vrat permits consumption of apples, bananas, pomegranates, almonds, raisins, milk, yogurt, and buttermilk. Sabudana khichdi is also acceptable. Rock salt (Saindhava Lavana) is recommended over regular salt.
Foods to avoid during any of the fasts include rice, wheat, pulses (like lentils and chickpeas), and processed foods with additives and preservatives. Onions, garlic, caffeine-containing beverages (tea and coffee), and energy drinks are also strictly prohibited, as they are considered to distract from spiritual focus. Adherence to these dietary guidelines is believed to enhance the spiritual benefits of the fast and increase the likelihood of receiving Shiva’s blessings.
